A container home is great for the environment and for you as the home come from recycled containers otherwise that have to be disposed and it also works out cheaper for you than building a home from scratch.
The cost of a 40-feet cargo container is about US$1200. As you can imagine, building a house made from shipping containers is very affordable. In general, the cost to build container house is half that of the cost of building a conventional house. Container homes are low cost, very strong, have a fast construction time, easy to modify, and shipping containers are widely available.
Container homes cost about four and a half dollars per square foot (the cost is just for the frame, not including the construction and finishing work). But do the calculations and you’ll see the basic (frame only) cost for a 3,000 square foot home built from recycled containers is about $13,500. Even with the added cost of having to configure and finish the basic units to make them into a home it’s still quite a savings over traditional home building methods.
One of the key benefits to this approach is the speed of the build – the benefits of a modular approach (joining shipping cans together) is that the build time is rapid – so rapid in fact its typically done in a fraction of the time that a standard home build would take.
Although the price of containers is currently on the rise (due to various factory closures in China during 2009 and early 2010), you can still pick up a fairly good bargain. As the global recession starts to ebb and global trade routes begin to get busier again, the production of shipping containers will increase also. You’ll start to see container prices start to dip again, or at the very least remain stable.
Building permits for a shipping container home may vary by state and county
